Food Allergy Friday Newsletter
Dr. Alice Hoyt

Hi there,

This week, I’m celebrating my birthday — and rather than cake (okay, yes, cake too!), I'm celebrating by raising awareness for Code Ana, a nonprofit that is very close to my heart.

You may already know Code Ana’s mission: to ensure every school is prepared for medical emergencies. Our schools serve children with chronic conditions, including food allergies, asthma, seizure disorders, cardiac conditions, diabetes, and more. Yet many schools still lack the protocols, training, and confidence they need to respond quickly and effectively when  —  not IF  — emergencies happen.

Code Ana provides:
  • School Emergency Response Plans, including anaphylaxis protocols

  • Training for educators, school nurses, paramedics, clinicians, and students

  • Guidance for physicians, NPs and PAs who want to support their local schools in prescribing life-saving medications and helping schools acquire and learn how to use AEDs.

As pediatricians and pediatric APPs, we are uniquely positioned to be healthcare-knowledge bridges between families and schools. When schools are confident and prepared, children are safer, and families feel more supported.

So for my birthday, I would love your help in spreading the word:
  • Share Code Ana with a school nurse or administrator. Simply share this email or our page codeana.org ⬅️

  • Mention it to the families you serve 👋

  • Or simply reply to this email if you’d like materials to share — my team will send them to you directly and walk with you as you prescribe your first stock epi (we’ve streamlined the process so it’s really super easy) 📧

Thank you for the work you do every day to keep kids safe and thriving.
Here’s to another year of caring, connecting, and empowering our communities together. 💛

Warmly,
Alice

To screen or not to screen babies for food allergies?
Food Allergy Friday NewsletterDr. Alice Hoyt Hi there, For this week’s Food Allergy Friday, here’s the question I hear often from general pediatricians:“Should we screen babies before early peanut introduction?” Based on current evidence and expert consensus — including the consensus document by Fleischer et al., JACI: In Practice, 2021 — the answer is no:➡️ Routine screening (skin testing or ...
Early Childhood Anaphylaxis Collaborative
Food Allergy Friday NewsletterDr. Alice Hoyt Hello from sunny Florida! I just finished speaking on a panel at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) annual conference. I had the honor of discussing a topic that is critical for childcare providers to know: how to recognize and respond to anaphylaxis in babies and toddlers. Our youngest patients spend so much of the...

In most of these newsletters, I am sharing with you recent food allergy news or discussing an issue that pediatricians, NPs, PAs, and/or families have asked me about. Today, I'd like to try something a little different! I'd like to ask you what are you being asked by colleagues and families about food a...
